Startup spotlight: Abitü 💊

Abitü founders Ana and Mayra
In celebration of Women’s History Month, we’re thrilled to spotlight the remarkable startup Abitü in this edition. Based in Mexico, Abitü is a D2C health and wellness brand that focuses on creating premium vitamin and supplement formulas tailored specifically for women. Additionally, they offer personalized health and nutrition consultations to help women adopt healthier habits and create communities through its online wellness hub. Through its products and consultations, Abitü addresses a crucial gap in the market by acknowledging the unique health needs of women, which have often been overlooked in research and product development.
In a healthcare landscape where women spend an average of 9 years in 'poor health'—25% longer than men—and only 4% of healthcare-related research and development efforts in the US focus on women's health issues, it's unsurprising that there's a scarcity of supplement brands tailored to their needs. Additionally, there's a misconception that 'women’s health' is limited to sex-specific reproductive concerns, overlooking prevalent diseases like autoimmune disorders, depression, and headache disorders, which disproportionately affect women. With such disparities in medical research and effective treatments, it's crucial to promote a better understanding and attention to women’s health needs across all stages of life.
Abitü was founded in 2019 by Ana Fierro and Mayra Bravo, two seasoned professionals and health gurus. Since then, Abitü has rapidly expanded its presence across online and in-person retailers in Latin America, and the team has grown to four passionate individuals and six health board members focusing on women’s health. Their range of supplements aims to improve overall health, enhance athletic performance, and manage hormonal changes natural to women’s life stages. Through its online consultations, supplements, and partnerships with other health and wellness brands, Abitü has already assisted hundreds of women in their health and wellness journeys.
Health by Women, for Women 👯♀️
In conversation with Ana Fierro, we learned that Abitü is deeply committed to being a women-focused brand, dedicated to providing the supplements and guidance necessary for women to achieve their health objectives and navigate the various stages of life effectively. The founders established Abitü in response to the industry's neglect of women's health research and attention, particularly due to challenges in standardizing control groups within this demographic. This oversight has led to women being sidelined in clinical medication tests, sometimes resulting in harmful consequences. Alarmingly, research reveals that medications are 3.5 times more likely to be withdrawn due to safety concerns in women than in men since 1980. Clearly, there's an urgent need for a more inclusive and proactive approach to women's health.
Ana and Mayra envisioned Abitü as a comprehensive solution for women looking to optimize their health and address nutritional deficiencies with high-quality ingredients. Today, Abitü offers certified formulas to improve immune health, manage postnatal health, address hormonal imbalances and insulin resistance, and enhance athletic performance for women. Additionally, the platform provides personalized guidance and consultations led by certified nutritionists, doctors, and lab-certified formulas. By bringing together these resources, Abitü aims to make women-focused health supplements more accessible and empower women to improve their overall health with confidence.
Abitü products can be found on their online store and through major retailers in Latin America like Mercado Libre and Liverpool. Perhaps most exciting is that Abitü specialists conduct around dozens of personalized consultations every month, guiding customers on improving their health and forming healthier habits. These interactions also help Abitü better understand customer needs, leading to the creation of products that cater to those requirements. In our discussion with Ana, we discovered that Abitü plans to launch new products in 2024, specifically targeting the management of prenatal health, as well as PCOS and PMS symptoms.
Our Translation 🕵️
As we celebrate Women's History Month, we are truly inspired by Abitü’s remarkable dedication to promoting healthier habits among women of all ages. Ana and Mayra's commitment to providing tailored solutions for women's nutritional needs is commendable, reflecting a deep understanding of the unique challenges women face in maintaining their well-being and overall health. We are particularly excited by the potential of the health consultations and community groups, as we believe that such formats empower women to take charge of their health with confidence, and simultaneously raise awareness of the common struggles that women face as they take care of their health.
Looking forward, we hope that Abitü’s proactive stance towards filling the gaps in women's health research and product development sets a positive precedent for the industry. As advocates for gender equality and health equity, we're big fans of Abitü's mission and applaud their efforts in improving the lives of women everywhere.
