Startup spotlight: Pivot 🧑‍💻

The Pivot team

Following the theme of exploring international startups dedicated to facilitating career transitions for professionals, we're thrilled to shine a spotlight on Pivot this week. Pivot stands out as a dynamic future-of-work company committed to assisting early and mid-career individuals in achieving their ambitious career goals with efficiency and effectiveness.

As technological advancement and globalization continue to affect global demand for different professions (many of which did not even exist 20 years ago), professionals worldwide face an ongoing challenge to evolve in response to changing demands of the job market. With the average job tenure in 2023 standing at under three years and continuing to decrease, projections suggest that by 2030, approximately 1.7 billion career transitions will occur globally, with a significant portion taking place in emerging economies like India. According to the Pew Research Center, it's anticipated that the average worker will transition between industries three to four times throughout their lifetime.

Founded in 2021 by Arjun Prakash, a seasoned consulting leader in the HR industry across the US and India, Pivot has quickly made its mark with its personalized plans to empower professionals in their career journeys. Through its mentorship, courses, and planner resources, Pivot has already assisted over 4500 professionals in navigating their career shifts, and the team has grown to seven passionate individuals.

The Future of Work is Dynamic 📊

Given the growing unpredictability of the job market, navigating a career transition isn’t a simple task. It’s a sentiment that perhaps many of our readers will share: whether it's shifting domains or industries, relocating abroad, or transitioning from entrepreneurship to traditional employment, the process can feel haphazard, isolating, and draining. Unfortunately, the resources available to aid career transitions are often scattered, and most workers don't have access to personal and useful guidance from mentors. As a result, the average career transition demands 12+ months of significant effort to plan and execute. Surely, there must be a better way forward.

Arjun founded Pivot with the vision of providing a comprehensive solution for individuals aiming to landtheir dream roles. Pivot offers tailored plans for career transitions powered by AI-driven tools, mentorship from industry veterans, access to courses for upskilling, and a curated job marketplace. By bringing all these resources together, Pivot aims to streamline and empower workers in executing successful career transitions, ultimately helping them secure fulfilling and lucrative positions in premium industries.

Here's how it works: When a new user joins Pivot, they fill out an onboarding form and craft their career transition plan with the help of AI tools – for example, a user may be interested in moving from a QA analystto a data engineer role. Pivot then pairs them with industry mentors for 1:1 sessions  where they receive personalized guidance on landing their desired role. Pivot also recommends online courses/bootcamps to bridge their skill gaps. When the user is ready to start applying for jobs, Pivot provides resume, LinkedIn, and portfolio reviews, along with 1:1 mock interviews, and features their profile in its professional network for relevant opportunities. Typically, within three to four months, users secure a new position in their chosen industry.

Democratizing Access to Emerging Career Paths

Pivot has strategically focused its GTM efforts on the 26 million early- and mid-career professionals in India employed in tech roles, as well as those in finance, management consulting, sales, and HR. Looking ahead to the latter half of 2024, they plan to expand into the US market, where they estimate a target audience of 30 million professionals. Through a subscription-based service and earning commissions from the courses marketplace, Pivot has devised a business model that fosters mutual benefits for professionals and employers, ensuring a motivated and skilled workforce.

In our conversation with Arjun, he highlights Pivot's revolutionary approach to personalized career support, emphasizing that the evolving nature of work and non-linear careers has fundamentally changed the needs of workers. Pivot recognizes the growing fluidity in how we work and believes in the importance of ensuring equal opportunities for professionals in emerging economies. The core mission is to empower workers to utilize technology for career advancement and to democratize access to emerging career options that will continue to rise in the years to come.

Our Translation 🕵️

At VWB, we believe that Pivot's approach to empowering professionals in their career transitions is both timely and innovative, particularly in a rapidly-evolving job market where adaptability is key. As they prepare to expand into the US market, we're excited to see how their model benefits a new audience of 30 million professionals. Additionally, we're intrigued by the potential to replicate Pivot’s approach in other emerging economies – such as in Central Asia, Africa, and Latin America. These regions often face similar challenges in providing affordable and effective career transition support, and Pivot could offer a valuable solution to these challenges at a global scale.

We also want to underscore the social impact and significance of this venture. In our view, Pivot is not only facilitating individual career advancement, but it is also contributing to the economic empowerment and social mobility of millions of professionals. As the future of work continues to evolve, Pivot's commitment to providing comprehensive and personalized support to its users can democratize access to job opportunities across different geographies and socioeconomic backgrounds.
