We're Paula and James, former classmates and avid enthusiasts of venture capital. Our journey began at Brown University, where we bonded over our shared fascination with comparing societies and lifestyles across different regions while learning Chinese together.

Soon, we realized that many of these differences in social behaviors were connected to the existence of startups, business models, and technologies that were essential in one country, but did not exist in another.

Post-graduation, our paths diverged. Paula further immersed herself in China as a Schwarzman Scholar, while James founded an education company and pursued business studies in the United States. Serendipitously, our paths converged once again in the world of venture capital.

Leveraging our diverse international experiences and deep involvement in VC, we're thrilled to unveil Venture Without Borders—a platform dedicated to exploring successful ventures from regions like China, Latin America, and beyond, spotlighting innovations that we believe can bring positive value to the US and elsewhere.

We’re passionate about international analysis, and are committed to sharing unique insights on how entrepreneurship transcends borders to inspire innovation.

Venture Without Borders is intended for venture capitalists, comparative political analysts and economists, global-minded entrepreneurs, and any other individuals who are eager to explore how thriving business models from different corners of the world can be harnessed and reimagined in various contexts.

We founded Ventures Without Borders in November 2023 in an effort to push forward the conversation on glocalization as it pertains to startups, as well as to promote international dialogue and cooperation in an increasingly polarized era. In recent years, we’ve witnessed the growing U.S.-China rivalry throughout our work in international diplomacy and in venture capital. Moreover, as value creation becomes increasingly decentralized away from Silicon Valley and into historically overlooked geographies, we hope to help you uncover and understand ventures from diverse regions that could become the next unicorn.

Throughout our travels in Asia, Latin America, and Europe, we were surprised by the burgeoning entrepreneurial ecosystems across these continents, as well as the adaptation of successful US startups and their business models into the local markets. Despite this, there is little talk in the VC circles around traditional US venture and tech hubs on these new markets and adaptation possibilities.

Venture Without Borders works to fill this gap. Each week, we draw on our experiences to deliver a briefing of the most successful venture-backed startups across diverse geographical contexts, combined with commentary from our experience in international politics and VC. In future volumes of this newsletter, you can also expect news syndication and analysis, startup spotlights, deep-dive investment memos, relevant book and content reviews, and musings on cross-border investing and collaboration.
